 The Black Student Union of St. Andrews: A Legacy of Leadership and Unity The history of the Black Student Union (BSU) at St. Andrews is a story of resilience, leadership, and cultural pride that began during one of the most pivotal eras in American history. Born in the late 1960s and early 1970s—against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement—the BSU emerged as a vital voice for African American students at St. Andrews Presbyterian College (later St. Andrews University). The Early Years In the early 1970s, St. Andrews saw a significant influx of African American students, many arriving from Atlanta. These students brought new energy and determination, but also faced the challenges of integration on a campus in the South.
